Mobile Phone as Bluetooth Wireless Modem
What you need?
Step 1: Pair your PC/laptop and Phone
Enable Bluetooth on your phone.
In the case of a Motorola V3 RAZR the steps are as follows Settings > Connectivity > Setup > Power on > On > Back > Find Me
Start up you Bluetooth software utility.
This software will allow you to pair your Bluetooth devices i.e you phone and your PC.
(Please note these instructions might not work when using an add-on Bluetooth USB dongle. In this case you would have to use the software that came with the Bluetooth dongle and skip to Step 2 )
Click Start > Control Panel > Blue tooth devices> Add >
After following the given instructions tick the box saying “My device is setup and ready to be foundâ€
When your phone is found it should prompt you to enter a passkey. After this your computer prompts for you to enter the same passkey. When you have done this your PC and phone are connected.
Options come up for you to select the services you wish to use. Select Dial-Up Networking, then click the Finish button:
Step 2: Configure Your dialup settings.
Click start > Connect to > Show All connections

In the window sidebar click “create new connection†This bring up the connection wizard
Leave the options as is and click “Nextâ€
Select the option to “setup my connection manually“
Select option “Connect using a dialup modem” Click Next
Select Bluetooth Dial up network modem in the devices list. Click Next
Type in a name for your connection. (It can be anything)
You are prompted to enter a number that will be used to dial up. In the case of South Africa – MTN network enter *99***#.
Find out from your mobile service provider what this number is?
The next option request a user name and password this is optional. Leave it blank. click next. > Finish
Test your connection. If you are successful the folowing should pop up in your system tray.
Does not work !!
Setting up a BlueTooth dialup modem can be tricky due to the variety of software utilities used in pairing up and discovering services. Your Bluetooth Software and mobile phone setup may be different.
However the steps to follow are generally the same
1. Pair Up your phone with computer / laptop.
2. Select BlueTooth dialup services
3. Configure the dialup connection
The speed of the Internet connection is generally slow compared to other connection modes and varies with signal strength, the type of network (EDGE GPRS, HSDPA).
